We spent our first week in Cape Town in an AirBnB in Muizenberg. Muizenberg is a super charming beachy neighborhood, right on a beautiful white sand beach. It was the perfect start to our trip – relaxation central. In addition, it’s a surfer’s paradise with a great beach break that’s great for learners.
Even if you’ve never heard of Muizenberg, you may recognize the colorful beach huts you see in these photos. The Victoria changing houses date back to the 19th century. The line the coast and represent the whimsy of this part of Cape Town perfectly.
Muizenberg also has a gorgeous coastal path that is perfect for an easy walk or an early morning run when you’re trying to beat the summer heat.
There are also some great restaurants and coffee shops in Muizenberg. We especially loved Knead Bakery for it’s huge variety of lunch options, from salads to burgers and delicious pastries. It’s also a great place to get your coffee fix.
Another great spot to grab lunch or a post-surf snack is Yoffi Falafel. Their pita wraps are off.the.chain and super cheap.
I also really wanted to go surfing while we were in Cape Town. I’ve gone a handful of times in Northern California and dang the water here is cold. Like ice cream headache cold. You still need a wetsuit to surf in Cape Town but the water on the Indian Ocean side is much warmer than in San Francisco.
I knew I needed a lesson, so we checked out Gary’s Surf School right on Muizenberg Beach. His online reviews were the best in the area and apparently he’s the one who has trained most of the people who own other programs in the area!
My instructor, Brandon, was amazing. We reviewed the basics and he got me into the water catching some small waves in no time flat. I’ve never had so much success getting up and actually ‘surfing’ before this. I owe that to Brandon and his patience, high expectations and gentle teasing.
If you find yourself in Cape Town, I highly recommend checking out Gary’s Surf School for a surf lesson in Muizenberg.
While in Muizenberg, we rented a small apartment through AirBnB. We used AirBnB several times in South Africa and had fantastic experiences at each place. You can find the information for the fabulous sunny place that we rented just a block from the beach below.
