Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa was one of my favorite things that we did on our trip there. It’s just as it sounds – a massive rock plateau that looks like a table. It’s right in the middle of the city and is only accessible by a cable car.
It’s also one of those places where it’s better to let the photos speak for themselves.
Instead, I’ll just share a few tips for visiting Table Mountain.
It’s an amazing place to catch the sunset. It has absolutely spectacular views of the entire city.
Timing of your cable car ride is important. First, budget more time than you think you need to get there. There’s typically a line of cars and buses making the trip there very slow. It’s essential to purchase your tickets online for the cable car trip in advance. We did this, just a few hours before we actually made the trip, and it was amazing to walk past the line that stretched on and on. Dress in layers! As the sun sets and the fog rolls in, it’s really cold up there.
Another important thing is timing. You can hike along the top of the mountain, which is something we didn’t budget enough for. We went up around 6pm and sunset was around 7:45pm. This was enough time to walk around just around the cable car platform and to snag a place to catch golden hour and the sunset. I would have loved to have more time to hike a little further! It think getting there about 3 hours before sunset would have been perfect.
Finally, if you are going to go for sunset, don’t forget a flashlight or headlight for the walk back to the car.
