I ran the Strawberry Fest 10K in Sun Prairie last weekend. I wanted to do a 10K to check-in with my fitness to get an idea of where I’m at for my half marathon in a few weeks. The course was almost entirely an out-and-back, which was nice because it allowed me to keep an eye on my competition! I started out at an easy pace so I didn’t get my heart rate up too quickly right away and peak early. Around mile 4, I was feeling good so I really started to kick it. I passed about 5 women who had been within my sight for the entire race. I felt strong and had negative splits for the last few miles.
I ended up setting a 45 second PR and still felt like I could have given a bit more, which is a good sign for my future race! The race had quite a few “real” athletes – even a few girls home for the summer who race collegiate track and field. My final time was 46:45, which was good enough for fourth overall female and 2nd in my age group!
I really enjoyed the race itself, which had a well-marked course and a few hills. Another bonus was post-race Zumba, but I opted to stretch instead. The only downside was that the awards ceremony took place over 90 minutes late! I was anxious to get going to do other commitments and waiting so long was agonizing!
