Ridiculously easy DIY Cake Stands made from a thrift store plate and mug. Genius!

As I mentioned in my last post, over the next few weeks I’m going to be sharing all of the recipes and DIYs from my recent colorful confetti party! Today’s DIY is crazy easy and will cost hardly anything. You can make these beautiful party platters and cake stands with materials found at your local thrift store.

Get the DIY for these colorful cake stands after the jump!

Colorful DIY Cake Platters - perfect for a dessert table or party!

All you need is a plate, a mug or bowl, epoxy and a spray paint that has paint & primer in one (regular spray paint will scrape right off). You can decide what look you want – with a mug handle, or with a bowl or ceramic cup instead.

It’s important to note that these platters will not be food safe. They are great for serving cupcakes or cookies, but for other things add a plate or a layer of parchment paper.

Easy DIY to display food at a party. Colorful party platters and cake stands!

Pretty serving platter DIY with just spray paint and a thrifted plate - genius!

Easy Colorful DIY Cake Platters

Materials:

Plate
Mug or bowl for platter base
Spray Paint – I had good luck with Valspar Premium Finish with Micromist Spray that I found at Lowe’s
Safety Mask
Strong Epoxy
Coarse Sandpaper
Clear Gloss Sealant (optional)

Materials for making a DIY cake platter

Instructions:

  1. Start with a clean and dry plate/mug. Cover all visible surfaces with a thin, even coat of spray paint. Apply a second coat within the time suggested on the paint can’s instructions (usually about an hour).
  2. Sand the base of the plate where you will glue on your mug. Attach the mug with epoxy.
  3. To improve longevity, consider sealing with a gloss sealant. Because this DIY is not food safe, you shouldn’t need to wash the platter, but instead clean off crumbs and spills with a damp rag.
