When I first heard about Half United, I was impressed by their jewelry designs. They are the perfect mix of feminine and edgy, and completely unlike anything in my jewelry drawer right now. Then I heard about the mission behind the designs. Half United donates half of their profits to provide meals to children. They have provided 140,000 meals in the last four years. Looking good and doing good? Now that’s something I can get behind.
Half United jewelry prominently features recycled bullets. They’ve taken something that is a symbol of fear and repurposed it into a conversation-starter for the fight against hunger.
As a pediatrician, I’ve learned that hunger is a problem even here in the United States. It’s heart-wrenching to talk to my families in clinic and learn that they sometimes wonder if their paycheck will last until the end of the month so they can provide their children with the food they need to grow and thrive. It’s great to learn about companies that are acting in a socially-responsible way to help this problem both in the United States and around the world.
