I spend a lot of time sharing fun sparkly outfits on the blog, or the casual digs that I wear for weekend coffee runs, but let’s get real. Most of the time I’m dressed professionally for my “day job” as a pediatrician. Hardly a place for a sequined skirt, y’know?
After one of my girlfriends confessed to me that she has a hard time navigating being stylish but still professional at her job at a start-up in town, I thought it would be fun to share how I find that balance when I’m working at the hospital.
I’m a firm believer that professional doesn’t have to be boring. At work, I’m all about bright colors and prints but above all, being comfortable. On any given day I’m bending down to examine a toddler or running down the hall to respond to an emergency.
This look incorporates all of my favorites into one, thanks to some help from Nautica. I bet stylish professional clothing isn’t the first thing you think of when you hear Nautica, is it? They have so much more than the perfect outfit to wear on your next yacht ride. I shop there for everything from bedding to home goods.
I’m always looking for a way to incorporate color into my wardrobe. This collared printed shirt from Nautica is a relaxed fit that allows me to move easily, but still looks professional. The first time I wore it to work I was shocked by how many compliments I got. I’m talking 4-5 in one morning! And they were mostly for guys, which is definitely unusual. I wonder what it is about this particular top that is enough to make all these complete male strangers stop me on the street to tell me they like it?
There’s some subtle contrasting print action going on with these jacquard pants from Nautica. They aren’t crazy enough to get me labeled as “eccentric” but they are so much more fun than your typical black work pant! Short gal tip: At 5’2″, I love buying ankle pants as they fit me like a normal pant and I can skip the tailoring bill. The color block blazer overtop is so comfy it could be a sweatshirt.
My go-to work bag is from Lo & Sons, it’s super well made and has tons of pockets to keep me organized. I’ve been using it for years and it still looks almost new. My favorite thing though, is that bottom of one of the outer pockets unzips so when you travel you can slip it over the handle of a rolling suitcase to spare your shoulders the weight of lugging it around.
Tell me, what kind of tips do you have to look stylish at work while still being professional?

I wear workout clothes to work. 🙂 But when I used to have a desk job, I always enjoyed shift dresses with tights and heels. So easy. Happy Friday!
Haha, so envious! Although when I’m on months that I have to wear scrubs I definitely look forward to getting back in my dresses!
You look SO professional. I love love love the detail in those pants. I also would love to see your tote in person. I’ve been wanting one of their bags for a while and I’m certain I’d buy one if I could see it first 🙂
xx Katie
lovely letters
I am happy to show it to you! I’m such a fan!
To make my professional outfit look less boring, I try to add some interesting accessories. Whether it’s a fun necklace, colored tights, or a brightly printed scarf, it’s those small touches that can really pack a punch!
I love bright accessories! Such a great tip!
I ADORE those printed pants. The print is subtle enough for any conservative work environment or occasion so they are just perfect!
Thanks Chelsea! I agree!
SUPER digging those PANTS!!
RIGHT!?!?! Just a little bit unexpected, right?
