If you’re like me, you’ve seen gold flatware blowing up the interwebs but when you went to check on prices to buy your own set, you cringed at the price. From what I’ve seen, the average price seems to be about $10 per piece! Not on my resident salary, no way.
I’ve had my same set of silverware since junior year of college and needless to say it’s seen better days. Our apartment in San Francisco has a garbage disposal and somehow mysteriously it seems like all of our spoons now have little teeth marks taken out of them. (I’m looking at you, Pat!) Rather than just junk it, I thought I would experiment with some gold spray paint to see if I could do some DIY gold plated flatware.

Luckily, the results were awesome! Mind you, this isn’t safe to eat off of, but it is nice for food styling for blogging. Heck, with the quality of Instagramming out there these days, you don’t even need to have a food blog to need some prop gold flatware. Seriously, some of the stuff people do with their morning coffee is way more artistic than I do with a lemon tart!
DIY Gold Flatware for Blogging
You will need:
Old cutlery
Gold spray paint – I used this brand to get a pretty matte finish.
Cardboard or paper to protect your work surface
Instructions:
Working outside, lay your silverware out on your cardboard or paper. Cover the silverware with an even coat and let dry. Flip and repeat on the other side. That’s it! Now you’re ready to take your food styling to the next level!
