Figuring out what to eat while camping often takes advance planning and requires a special trip to the grocery store. Because we don’t always have a lot of time leading up to our vacations, Pat and I have created this camping oatmeal recipe made from things you probably have around the house to take with us while camping or hiking. I’m going to share a rough recipe for it as a guide, but really it is a “scoop of this” and a “spoonful of that” and not based on strict measurements!
This recipe is great because it’s healthy, balanced, portable and non-perishable. It’s basically the perfect camping recipes! You can also make it gluten-free if you buy gluten-free oatmeal.
I took these photos on our recent camping trip to Big Sur. You can read more about that adventure here.
Just heat up water with a camp stove to complete your breakfast on the go!

This was great! I decided to premix my own healthier oatmeal for camping since I went vegan and the Quaker premixed packets have milk in them, not too mention too much sugar. My 7 year old loved it, had it for dinner and breakfast. He never even noticed that I ditched the grocery store packets. Didn’t even ask where they were. phew! I pulsed about 1/4 cup of the oats in my Nutribullet before adding them to the mix, makes the sauce seem a little thicker.

Awesome! We’ve really tried to replace storemade products with homemade versions too. I like the idea of pulsing the oatmeal. If you guys eat a lot of yogurt at home like we do, I highly recommend making your own! It’s so easy and cuts down on plastic waste. https://asideofsweet.com/crock-pot-greek-yogurt-maker-reviews/

Hi! What kind of oatmeal did you use for this? Steel cut or rolled? Quick cook? And for the measurements, is it 1 c. dry oats per person? The general oatmeal instructions seem to all say 1/4-1/2 c. per serving, so I just wanted to double check – want to make sure I have enough/not too much for bringing along camping! 🙂
Kelly Egan - A Side of Sweet says
We use old fashioned oats. The serving size reflects what feels like a meal to us. 🙂
