Put your crockpot to good use – for dessert! You’ll love this easy slow cooker apple crisp recipe paired with the perfect oat topping.Slow Cooker Apple Crisp Recipe with Oat Topping in the Crockpot!

We use our slow cooker all the time. From my favorite ever vegetarian chili, to this shredded chicken that works with everything, it’s our kitchen MVP. Using a slow cooker for dinner is obvious though. What about dessert? That’s what I’m doing today, making what’s going to be your go-to dessert for fall, slow cooker apple crisp.

Best of all, making this apple crisp recipe only takes 30 minutes of prep time. My favorite part might be the oat topping. It comes out of the slow cooker with a bit of crunch and a lot of oat-y cinnamon-y goodness. It’s the perfect partner for the soft apples that melt in your mouth.

Best Apples for Apple Crisp

When choosing apples, you want to choose apples that will hold their shape but don’t stay too firm. Good apples for this apple crisp are Granny Smith, Honeycrisp or Golden Delicious. Fuji apples will also work, because they are super firm, but will start to cook down in the crockpot. Even better, choose a mix of these apples!

I bet you’re wondering if you have to peel the apples for apple crisp. Peeling the apples gives a more even texture. The peels don’t get soft like the rest of the apple, so the final crisp will have tough pieces to chew. It’s more than worth it to take a few extra minutes and peel them!

Full disclosure, one may argue that this dessert is an apple cobbler. It has a ‘biscuit’ topping made by mixing egg in like a cobbler does. That being said, the way the mixture tastes coming out of the crockpot makes it more like an apple crisp, at least in my book. No one can disagree, the result is delicious, no matter what you call it.

Ingredients

Scale

Apple mixture ingredients:

  • 8 apples, peeled and cored (I used equal parts Granny Smith and Fuji)
  • ⅓ cup raw or granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • Zest and juice of 1 small lemon
  • 1 pinch of kosher salt

Apple crisp oat topping ingredients:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup raw or granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup old-fashioned or whole oats
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • Pinch of kosher salt
  • 1 egg
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • Vanilla ice cream, for serving

Special equipment:

  • Slow cooker

Instructions

Make the apple crisp filling:

  1. Cut the apples into ¼-inch slices. Toss with the sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon and salt and place in the crockpot.

Make the apple crisp oat topping:

  1. Combine the flour, sugar, oats, baking powder, cinnamon and salt in a large bowl.
  2. Add the egg and mix with a fork until the topping is coarsely combined. Spoon the mixture evenly over the apples.
  3. Pour the melted butter over the crisp and set the crockpot to high. Let cook for 4 hours.
  4. Serve warm topped with vanilla ice cream.

I cannot wait to do this! I have about 12 organic/local apples (not pretty, but delicious) that need to be hidden/enjoyed in a recipe. Thanks for sharing!
